Not Your Momma’s Sloppy Joes!

If you invite me over to your house and happen to pop open a can of sloppy joe sauce, I’m liable to say that I’m not feeling well and don’t feel like eating.  The reason?  After you try this super easy, super yummy, and far better for you than that stuff in the can, you’ll never look at the can again!  Promise.

This has been the same recipe that I have used for the last several years.  I found it one day while having a craving for sloppy joes and since then it’s usually a once a month dinner for us.  It’s so good!  Plus it’s pretty cheap to make.

This recipe happens to come from none other than Rachel Ray.  She has a couple of different sloppy joe recipes around but this one happened to be the one that called for the least amount of ingredients {which means the cheapest} AND I always have these things in my pantry. {huge plus}

What do you need?

  • 1 tblsp oil
  • 1 1/4 lbs hamburger meat
  • 2 tsp steak seasoning
  • 1 md onion, chopped
  • 1 tblsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 2 tblsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 tsp white vinegar

What do you do?

  1. Add oil to skillet and hamburger meat.
  2. Combine sugar and seasoning mix.  Add it to the meat in the skillet.
  3. Brown meat, add onion and Worcestershire sauce, cook 5 mins
  4. Add tomato paste, sauce, vinegar. Reduce heat cook 5 more minutes.
  5. Serve on buns that have been buttered and toasted in the oven.

I hope y’all try out these sloppy joe’s!  I know your gonna love them. :-)

Sounds yummy. I'm usually an out of the can sloppy joe kind of girl....it's just easier! But I have made my own before with ketchup as the main ingredient!

Trey just said on the way to school today that he wanted sloppy joes. So I have printed the recipe and it is on the dinner menu.
Thanks for sharing!
