Painting Your Own Damask

Edited to add...
DIY Day @ ASPTL

After searching on Saturday at Hobby Lobby for what I thought I wanted, I couldn’t find anything that spoke to me. What, am I the only one that things talk to?
I thought I wanted a cute little sign that said “Bath” or something similar. But the colors in the bathroom I am redoing, aren’t in any signs that I found.
I thought about it and thought, hmmm, I will just paint my own.
So I headed over to the canvases, cheap ones of course. 8X10 was my preference size. Then I went over to the craft paints. The 99 cent ones are just as great as the ones that cost $2.00. So I grabbed sand and burnt umber. I went for the ones that were closet to our colors in the shower curtain. I knew I already had a blue at home that I could mix up to match the robins egg blue in the shower curtain.
After getting home and thinking on it. I decided to paint Damask. Yes, I said damask. No, I am not an artist. My hand shakes when trying to paint a small little line, but I new that I could do it.
I looked up a damask print that I liked. I went with one that didn’t have so many details in it. I took the image into Photoshop (you can use any editing software) and I enlarged it big enough to print out, I also knew that I didn’t want a whole image of damask on the canvas.
Once printed out….Oh wait a minute…I painted the canvas the sand color first! (allowed it to dry) Then I cut out my pieces of damask and laid them out on my canvas where I wanted them. (Print in fast draft, save ink!)
Once I had them placed where I wanted them, I took a pencil and traced around each piece. Oh and be careful with all these pieces laying on your canvas. I sneezed and lost half of them and had to rearrange once again. And then the air kicked on (the table is below an air duct) and low and behold some of the pieces flew off and I had to fix those too.
feb2009 061Once you have it all traced out it will look like this…
feb2009 062 Now the tedious part. You start painting. Using your smallest paint brush, you must go around the edges of each one of your little trace outs. (I had to do it twice)
Once dry grab a brush a little larger and start painting! Once dry you can add a frame, any 8x10 frame will fit it. I chose one that we had in our closet and I painted it white and then stressed it up a bit..I chose to hang it below a shelf in the girls bathroom.
Yes, I did hang it sideways. There is something about sideways damask print that I like. *smiles*
feb2009 064 I hope that you all try your hand at this easy and cheap art piece!

Hey! You can go here: http://www.bsfinternational.org/ and see if there is a BSF class near you. On the first Monday of every month they have intro, where you go and hear about BSF and then if there's room (which there usually is) they place you in a discussion group. It begins in Sept and ends in May but you can join throughout the year. This year is about the life of Moses and then next year we'll study the book of John.

This is great! It really looks just like damask! I have curtains in that pattern and should try painting something to go with them :)

That's a really neat project! You must have a steadier hand than you thought. I always shy away from anything like this, but you've inspired me!

Great idea. Lowe's magazine did it on a larger scale by using a doormat over the wood & spray painting it then removing the mat.
I may have to give those a try.
